For a lot of women, being pregnant is an exciting time filled with anticipation, baby showers, and nursery decorations. But for lower-income women who don’t have access to affordable health care, pregnancy—and the health complications that sometimes come with it—can be downright scary.

It doesn’t even need to be said that women play an integral role in the health care of many others, including their children, their parents, and their families as a whole. And though women make up half of the U.S. population, for years they have not received treatment equal to men in the health care system. Health reform aims to eliminate this unfair treatment.

Now that health reform has become law (ah, that
feels good), long-awaited benefits will start kicking in! From subsidies to
exchanges and insurance regulations to cost-containment measures, it's
sometimes hard to keep it all straight. But the main thing to remember is that

Since my mom discovered the Internet, she has been a voracious forwarder of e-mails. I get all kinds of stuff from her-morality tales, IQ tests, and even one titled "Interesting Aspirin Information." Battling H1N1 is scary. Just ask CNN's Dr.
Sanjay Gupta, who came down with the flu while in Afghanistan last week. Dr. Gupta
received the appropriate treatment, but some people aren't so lucky. Some
people either don't have access to health care, or simply can't afford the
costs associated with seeing a doctor. And that's when H1N1 gets really scary.

We know that insurance companies can deny individuals their
health coverage for almost anything - for little things, like acid reflux, a
hangnail, even acne, and also for more serious medical issues like cancer or
heart disease. Yet if you thought this egregious practice couldn't get any
worse, it has.
