Last night marked a turning point in the health reform debate.
Families USA, and many of our friends in the health reform community,
strongly supported the public option as a way to force private insurers
to deliver better, cheaper services. It became clear that it is not
politically possible to achieve the 60 votes needed to move health
reform out of the Senate without a compromise on this issue.

Health reform's opponents have proven that they're willing
to stop at nothing to block health care reform. They've made up rumors about
death panels, they've ignored reputable polls that show that the majority of
Americans do support health care
reform, and they continue to scare the public by attempting to convince us that
health care reform is a direct route to socialism. The last one is, of course,
not true, but if you don't want to take our word for it, perhaps you'll listen
to doctors from Massachusetts - a state that has been working to implement
universal health coverage since 2006.

Today, Senate Majority Leader
Harry Reid outlined the details of the proposed health reform bill that will be
debated on the Senate floor. That bill constitutes an amalgam of the bills
previously adopted by the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Health,
Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Ron Pollack, Executive Director of

House Republican leader John Boehner has said a lot of
things this year that show just how out of touch he is about America's
health care crisis. His comment last week, however, truly takes the cake.

People on both sides of the health care debate are fighting

with solutions to the health care crisis facing our country by pushing for more
affordability measures, cost controls, and insurance company regulation.

A few nights ago, I attended Representative Jim Moran's town
hall in Reston, Virginia. I arrived at South Lakes High
School several hours before it was set to begin, yet little did I know that a
different event had already begun outside. There were hundreds of people lined
up at both entrances to the high schools. In addition to the people calmly
waiting in line to get in, there were other very vocal people lining the
sidewalks with signs, and some with props.

It seems that President Obama has been spending a lot of his
time these past few weeks responding to ludicrous and deliberately misleading
attacks on health reform. It seems like as soon as we finish responding to one,
another attack pops up. Unfortunately, a small group of loud radical fringe
opponents are trying to scare the public with blatant lies.

Health insurance is becoming more and more unaffordable for Americans in Maine. Small business owners, already struggling during the economic recession, are hurting the most. Without health reform, they'll see very little relief for their current woes.
