Yesterday afternoon, the National Journal published an
article stating that health insurers have been funding ads by the Chamber of
Commerce. While that may not seem like breaking news, consider the goal of
these ads: They are part of an effort to kill reform.
Even though the Christmas holiday is rapidly approaching,
and many are slowly decreasing their workloads, President Obama is hard at work
convincing Senators to pass health care reform before the 25th. On Tuesday, the President invited the Democratic
Caucus to the White House to discuss health insurance reform.
The morning was gray and the
lines were long, but I wasn't complaining. At the end of that line was the
chance to listen to President Obama give a speech to more 20,000 people
gathered at the University
of Maryland College Park
on the need to enact health reform, and to enact that reform now.
In a speech traversing policy, economics and emotion,
President Obama addressed a joint-session of Congress last night to put forth
his health care proposal. Up until this point, the President has held back to
allow Congress to move forward to develop bipartisan proposals to reform our
nation's health care system - taking a different approach from President
Clinton in 1993.
After an August filled with rumors of mythical proportions,
it's time to get down to business. Misinformation and words intended to scare
the public - like "death panels" and "socialized medicine
" - will have no place
in this debate when President Obama takes
the stage tonight to set the record straight about health care reform.
The word "quiz" may conjure up memories of difficult
questions and long lectures in the classroom, but this quiz is unlike those
from your childhood and it's definitely worth your time. We promise.
A few nights ago, I attended Representative Jim Moran's town
hall in Reston, Virginia. I arrived at South Lakes High
School several hours before it was set to begin, yet little did I know that a
different event had already begun outside. There were hundreds of people lined
up at both entrances to the high schools. In addition to the people calmly
waiting in line to get in, there were other very vocal people lining the
sidewalks with signs, and some with props.
It seems that President Obama has been spending a lot of his
time these past few weeks responding to ludicrous and deliberately misleading
attacks on health reform. It seems like as soon as we finish responding to one,
another attack pops up. Unfortunately, a small group of loud radical fringe
opponents are trying to scare the public with blatant lies.
