Let's start with a quick survey. When you think of theuninsured, who comes to mind? A friend, a neighbor...you? The answer could be one- or all - of the above. That's because in the last two years, nearly 87million Americans under 65 - one out of three people - were uninsured.Just to put it into perspective, that is more than twicethe population of California; over three times the population of Texas!In other words, it's A LOT of people.

Over the weekend, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius acceptedthe nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Sebelius boasts botha tremendous amount of relevantexperience, and the ability to nimbly work with her conservative colleaguesin the heavily red state.

After only five weeks in office, President Obama released hisfirst budget blueprint, which includes a $634 billion "down payment" on healthcare reform. As far as down payments go, this is a biggie.

This is a pretty big week in Washington. It's the week that President Obama held a "Fiscal Responsibility Summit" (that covered health care, among other topics), addresses a joint session of Congress tonight about the national economic crisis, and later on in the week will release his budget summary. So what does Obama's budget say on health care?

After weeks of debate in the House and the Senate, Congresshas officially passed, and President Obama has signed, the American Recoveryand Reinvestment Act. Although this bill is focused on how to fix the economy asa whole, there are provisions within the bill that bode well for health carereform. KaiserNetwork.orghas a great summary of those provisions, including $24.7 billion to cover 65%of COBRA subsidies for those who have been recently laid off and $87 billion inadditional funding for states' Medicaid programs....

Both Congress and President Obama have been busy this weektrying to hammer out a solution to the current economic crisis. The Senate andHouse have agreed on an economic recovery package that would add up to almost$790 billion. The bill is expected to hit President Obama's desk on Monday. Therecovery package includes provisions to help stimulate different sectors of theeconomy, and health care figured prominently. The Wall Street Journal hasspecifics about which programs will receive money here. IgorVolsky at TheWonk Room has noted a few tentative health care provisions.

Congress has been working overtime to enact legislation thatpaves a new road for the economy and averts an even deeper recession. Lawmakershave agreed to a compromise bill, which includes significant provisionsthat put health care for working families on the path to improvement, andCongress is expected to approve that compromise quickly. The House has already
passed the bill by avote of 246-183.
