Moving health reform through the Senate

Last night marked a turning point in the health reform debate.  Families USA, and many of our friends in the health reform community, strongly supported the public option as a way to force private insurers to deliver better, cheaper services.  It became clear that it is not politically possible to achieve the 60 votes needed to move health reform out of the Senate without a compromise on this issue.

In the Senate

Upon returning from the Thanksgiving recess, the Senate rolled up its sleeves and got right to work last week. The Senate officially started floor debate on its legislation to overhaul the nation's health care system. The legislative process can be confusing, so we wanted to fill you in on what's happened so far.

Delay Tactics

The health care bill has hit the Senate, and opponents of reform are planning to do everything in their power to stall the debate proceedings, and, if possible, grind them to a halt.

The Senate votes to move forward

With a vote of 60-39, the Senate voted to begin debate on its health reform bill this past weekend. And while a "vote to move the debate forward" may seem trivial and not that impressive, it was a huge step forward for proponents of health reform and an indication of what's to come.

TOMORROW! Monumental House Vote

Tomorrow, the House of Representatives is taking a historic step forward with a floor vote on the Affordable Health Care for America Act. This bill is significant not only because it represents a mile-marker that our country has never reached in the history of health reform, but also because it will enable almost every American to get health coverage.

Teabaggers: Full of Irony

"You are the most beautiful sight any of us freedom fighters have seen for a long time." Those are the words Rep. Michele Bachmann used to describe the scene on the West Lawn of the Capitol yesterday, as the protest came to a close. Sounds like an awesome crowd right? Not so fast.

BOO! Republicans are trying to scare you

Much of the controversy over health reform has centered around the idea of including a public option-a government-sponsored health insurance plan-in the final legislation. And much of the opposition has come from Republicans, who have warned that a public option would amount to a government takeover. (And, in their playbook, that's a bad thing.)
