Whether it is an obsession with town halls, vote counting,
or negotiations, much of the focus during this health reform debate has not
been on the actual human reasons why reform is so important.

Health reform has never been
easy. That lesson has come up throughout this year's legislative process - as
if decades of failed reforms had not yet made that clear.

This week, Republican candidate Scott Brown won the Senate
seat in Massachusetts, leaving the Democrats just short of the 60 votes needed
for a filibuster-proof majority. Unfortunately, this is not the outcome we had
hoped for.

The health reform debate is rounding the corner and
barreling towards the finish line-signing the bill into law. However, before we
reach this momentous end, there are a few more procedural hurdles to overcome.
The most daunting of them will be merging the House and Senate bills into a
single piece of legislation that will be able to receive a majority vote in
both chambers and to be signed into law by President Obama.

Since my mom discovered the Internet, she has been a voracious forwarder of e-mails. I get all kinds of stuff from her-morality tales, IQ tests, and even one titled "Interesting Aspirin Information." Really? I'm not sure what I would find "interesting" about aspirin. But alas, my mom is only doing what all her friends do, sharing stuff via this magical thing called the Internet.

At 7:15 a.m. the Senate took the last vote on their version of health
insurance reform legislation and passed the Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act on a strictly party line vote of 60 top 40.

This has been a remarkable day for the health reform movement. Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) announced this morning that he would support
the Senate health reform bill. "Change is never easy," Nelson told
reporters. "I truly believe this legislation will stand the test of
time. The lives of millions Americans will be improved."

We are getting down to the wire in the Senate health reform debate.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has been working around the
clock to meet a Christmas Eve deadline of passing the bill, but he has
been met with several obstacles along the way -some even more tough to
maneuver than the snowstorm that hit the northeast this weekend.

We keep saying it every week: We're closer than ever to
making health reform history. But, today, we could not mean it more. Really. We
are on the brink of seeing comprehensive health reform legislation passed in
the United States Senate.

Families USA today sent letters
to members of the Senate indicating that we intend to endorse the health
insurance reform bill and that we will support the legislation despite the our disappointment
about the lack of a robust public plan option.
