A year ago, President Obama signed the Children's
Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) into law. As we look
back on the impact of this new legislation over the past year, it is obvious
that we have much to celebrate. CHIPRA made vast improvements to kid's coverage

California, home to beautiful beaches and beautiful people,
is facing an ugly battle over the state budget. The state is facing a $24
billion deficit, and Governor Schwarzenegger has proposed to fill it with
massive cuts to crucial programs. The New
York Times says that the cuts, if enacted, "would turn California into a place
that in some ways would be unrecognizable in modern America: poor children would have no health
insurance."

Yesterday brought us one step closer to seeing meaningful
health care reform. The House and the Senate each passed
a budget resolution that included a commitment to providing coverage for
all Americans. The overall focus of the budget was on health care, energy, and
education - all issues that President Obama has made priorities in his administration.
This is a good sign that Congress is serious about working with the President
to pass his agenda, and an indication that we might see health reform this

A new Kaiser Family
Foundation poll revealed some puzzling beliefs held by Americans about
health care reform:Interestingly, while the majority of
Americans view action on health reform as more important than ever and believe
reform would be good for the country as a whole (59%), fewer think it would
personally benefit them or their family (39%).Hogwash.

Yesterday President Obama convened representatives from allsides of the health care debate to discuss comprehensive health care reform. Iwas privileged to participate as a voice for health care consumers, along with bipartisanmembers of Congress; doctors and nurses; people representing hospitals, drugmanufacturers, and health insurance companies; and labor and businessleaders.
